Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law

Capcom hits us once again with a portable attorney “simulator”. This time featuring characters from the hit(?) Adult Swim cartoon show Harvey Birdman. Did they manage to replicate the magic of the Ace Attorney games?

Overall, I’d have to say no, but it’s still an enjoyable, if short, game. The title’s greatest strength is also it’s greatest weakness. The mostly static characters of the Phoenix Wright games have been replaced with fully animated video clips, produced specifically for the game, and all the dialog is now fully voice acted with the show’s original cast. While this ups the production values considerably, it’s also very limiting in terms of content. The game is split up into five episodes which can be played in a little over two hours.

That’s very little compared to most games, but it is a portable title, and in playing short bursts on the bus getting to and from work, it took me about a week to complete. Also, if you consider that you’re basically getting five full episodes of the show with interactivity thrown in, it’s really not that bad a deal.

The other issue is that the game is ridiculously easy, in fact, it encourages bad dialog choices by rewarding you with unlockable video clips, and cameo appearances by some well-known Capcom characters. Phoenix Wright veterans need not worry too much however, the game still penalizes you for presenting the wrong evidence during a trial.

Basically, if you’re a fan of the show’s sense of humor, and you like attorney games, you can’t really go wrong with this one. Anyone else should wait for a price drop, or at least consider a rental.
