bee movie

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I nearly fell over backwards in my chair. Which is quite a feat, considering I was in a theater and the chairs were bolted down. The man responsible for one of the funniest (and one of my personal favorite) shows in the history of television had written and starred in a CGI movie about bees, which are possibly the most adorable cartoon insects imaginable. What could possibly go wrong?

Well a number of things actually. The chief offense being that they forgot to make the movie funny. Oh you might giggle once or twice, especially if you have a penchant for puns (lots of them) but nothing will make you laugh out loud. The level of humor is on par with what I imagine turn of the century gentlemen would find funny, jokes that would elicit a sternly voiced “well met” instead of loud guffaws of laughter.

I could forgive the lack of any real humor in this movie if the story was any good, but unfortunately it isn’t. The plot is so absurd that even people who are willing to buy into the concept of talking bees, and human-insect love affairs will be shaking their fists at the screen in disgust. In case you’re interested though, the main plot involves the bees suing the human race for stealing their honey, led by the bee Barry Benson played by Jerry Seinfeld who also happens to be dating (?) a human florist played by Rene Zellweger, and it just goes downhill from there.

Really, if you want a great CGI film, look no further than Pixar’s Ratatouille. If you want to take your children to the movies, try Disney’s surprisingly good latest film Enchanted. Stay away from Bee Movie, it’s an insult to both your intelligence and your children’s.
