Now I’m probably the only one who thinks this way, but I miss those classic revenge movies from the late 80’s and early 90’s. You know the ones I’m talking about, your Raw Deals, your Hard To Kills, and your Revenges (the one with Kevin Costner). They all had similar plots, awful puns, and cheesy soundtracks, but we didn’t (or at least I didn’t) care. Action was what I wanted, and those movies delivered.

In many ways, Shooter brings back what I loved about those movies and gets rid of the rest. In the old days, they would throw all realism and logic out the window when staging the action pieces. Not so in this one. Mark Wahlberg apparently underwent intense sniper training to prepare for the role, and it shows. The film does sometimes go into technical details that will be completely loss on everyone except the most die hard gun aficionado, but it’s a small price to pay in order to get a film which cares about realism.

That being said, you might be expecting another patriotic propaganda piece. Once again, the film goes in an unexpected direction by portraying American politicians and their underlings as quite corrupt, and ruthless. That’s probably why this movie didn’t make big business at the box-office.

Anyway, it’s not a great film. It’s just good. If you’re in the mood for some decent action and a good revenge storyline, give this one a rental.
